When i-Detox founder Anita Cheung was in New York attending the program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Lakshmi Harilela was attending her chef’s training at the Natural Gourmet Institute (called “Natural Gourmet Cooking School” then), although Anita and Lakshmi met only after they have both returned to Hong Kong.
Anita and Lakshmi share a lot of common ideas about nutrition and holistic health. Both adopt an integrative and East-meets-West approach to nutrition, nourishment and self care.
Chef Lakshmi will be our guest chef in the upcoming Superfood Happy Hour, showcasing some her tasty cooked food along with our many raw foods to give more variety to our Happy Hour!
Here’s more about chef Lakshmi…
Upbringing and cooking passion:
“Since a very young age, I have always had a passion for food. If you ask any one of my family, they will tell you that since I was a young baby, I always had some sort of food in my mouth (!) I was cooking since I was 12 years old, alongside my late Father, Mohan Harilela. My family ran restaurants, and I was always comfortable being in the kitchen. I decided to go to Hotel Management School Les Roches, Switzerland for some formal education. I have trained in both the Intercontinental and Excelsior hotels here in Hong Kong as a line cook and garde manger. The traditional education was great but I felt something was missing, so in 2004 I decided to learn about healthy whole foods. I embarked on a journey to New York City’s Natural Gourmet Institute, where I learnt all about food and health. After graduating, I worked alongside Chef Annie Somerville in San Francisco’s Greens in Fort Mason as a line chef. In 2006, I graduated as an Ayurvedic Nutritional Therapist from The European Institute of Vedic Studies.
Moving back to Hong Kong in 2006, I opened up Love True Food in the hopes of sharing my knowledge and passion for ‘true food’ to the world. Now, Love True Food conducts private dinners, healthy catering, healthy cooking classes and Ayurvedic health and dietary assessments. We believe in true food and we believe that everybody has the right to good health. This is why I teach people that they have the ability to heal themselves for the better, no matter what.”
Lakshmi’s passions and hobbies:
“I love eating, cooking , practicing yoga, reading spiritual books, painting, singing and dancing. I also enjoy the random dive here and again. However, my true passion is to share, cook for and feed people throughout the world. I love teaching people that they are what they eat.
Yoga is another one of my passions, I enjoy studying asana (posture), pranayama (breathing techniques) and Raja Yoga(the King of Yogas). These techniques have helped me so much in my personal life, that all I want to do is share them with the world.”
Lakshmi’s experience with the i-Detox signature program:
Lakshmi has recently completed the i-Detox signature Superfood Detox program. Here’s what she has to say about her experience:
“I’ve been meaning to do your detox and wellness program. I am so glad I have finally done it. Doing it is part of my journey back to reconnecting with my true self – after a a year of restarting yoga and ayurvedic, and being selective about the clients that I serve, so that I can really live my purpose and not get burned out.Your program was very easy to do and I was never hungry. I AM AMAZED at what just 9 days has done. My skin feels like it can breathe again. I don’t need to wear make up now. I feel great and much happier.Thank you Anita and the i-Detox team for all your support!”
You can meet chef Lakshmi at the Superfood Happy Hour on 14th June (Fri)!
